Michael Jackson's Off the Wall (Epic Records, 1979) is the album that redefined pop music. Produced by Quincy Jones, it was Jackson's first release on Epic Records and his first true creative statement as an adult artist, blending disco, funk, R&B, pop, and soft rock into something entirely his own. The record features songwriting contributions from Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Rod Temperton, and Jackson himself.
The commercial results were historic. Off the Wall spent over eight months in the Billboard Top 10, hit number one on the Top Black Albums chart for 16 weeks, and became the best-selling album of 1980 in the United States. It produced two Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles, "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock with You," along with Top 10 hits "Off the Wall" and "She's Out of My Life," making Jackson the first solo artist to chart four Top 10 singles from a single album. It has since sold over 20 million copies worldwide, earned a Diamond certification from the RIAA in 2025, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008.
